Glossary of Marijuana Terms
Your complete guide to cannabis terminology. From mail order marijuana basics to advanced concentrate vocabulary — everything you need to know before you buy weed online in Canada.
A
AA / AAA / AAAA (Cannabis Grades)
The standard grading system for cannabis flower quality. AA (budget buds) is value-priced flower starting at $59/ounce, great for joints and edibles. AAA is premium quality with strong aroma and potency — the best balance of price and quality. AAAA (also called “Quads”) is craft-grade, top-shelf cannabis that is hand-trimmed, perfectly cured, and rich in THC and terpenes. At Kana Post, we carry all grades so you can buy weed online at any budget.
Access Point
A medical access point is an authorized location where patients can find and purchase medical marijuana. It can also be called a pick-up location. In the medical cannabis community, an access point is often synonymous with a dispensary depending on individual state legislation and guidelines.
Aroma
A term used to describe the general smell and/or taste of a certain plant or flower. Because consumers’ individual definitions of aromas (such as “earthy,” “skunky,” or “citrus”) can differ somewhat, aroma descriptions are meant as a basic guideline when you buy cannabis online.
Auto-flowering
A cannabis plant trait (most commonly found in Cannabis ruderalis) that allows the plant to flower automatically based on age rather than light cycles. Auto-flowering strains are popular with home growers because they mature faster and stay smaller.
AVB (Already Vaped Bud)
The leftover cannabis flower after it has been vaporized. AVB still contains some cannabinoids and can be reused to make edibles, tinctures, or capsules. Also known as ABV (Already Been Vaped).
B
Backcross (BX)
A backcross is a hybrid plant that has been bred with one of its parents (or a plant that is genetically similar) in order to create offspring that is closer to that of the original parent. This is often done to maintain rarer strains or strengthen those with desired recessive genes.
Badder / Batter
A type of cannabis concentrate with a creamy, cake-batter-like consistency. Badder is whipped during extraction, making it easy to handle and dab. It falls between wax and sauce in terms of texture and terpene retention.
BHO (Butane Hash Oil)
BHO stands for butane hash oil and is a potent concentrate of cannabinoids made by dissolving marijuana in its plant form in a solvent (usually butane). The resulting product has very high THC levels (generally more than flowers or hashish) and is a thick, sticky oil. BHO is also referred to as honey oil, “dabs,” earwax, or shatter, depending on the manufacturing method.
Blunt
Cannabis wrapped in a tobacco leaf cigar or cigarillo paper. The cigar may be hollowed out and then re-rolled with cannabis. Blunts often burn longer than joints and are usually found in larger social gatherings.
Bong
A large pipe, usually made of glass, that uses water to diffuse and cool the smoke as you breathe it into your lungs. Bongs come in many shapes and sizes and are a staple in cannabis culture.
Bowl
The part of a pipe or bong that holds the cannabis flower before it is ignited. “Smoking a bowl” refers to consuming one full bowl’s worth of cannabis.
Brick Weed
Low-quality cannabis that has been compressed into a brick shape for easy smuggling. Common in import markets, brick weed is usually dry, contains seeds and stems, and is far inferior to the premium flower available from Canadian online dispensaries.
Bubbler
A handheld pipe, usually made of glass, with a water reservoir at the bottom to cool and diffuse the smoke before it is inhaled. A bubbler combines the portability of a pipe with the water filtration of a bong.
Bud
Bud refers to the actual flower of the marijuana plant. These are the fluffy parts that are harvested and used for recreational or medicinal purposes as they contain the highest concentrations of active cannabinoids. When Canadians buy weed online, they are typically buying dried bud.
Budder
A cannabis concentrate with a soft, butter-like consistency. Budder is made by whipping extracted cannabinoids during the purging process, creating a smooth, easy-to-dab product that retains excellent flavor.
Budtender
The attendant working behind the counter at your local dispensary or retail cannabis shop who may be able to answer your questions on strains, cannabis products, and make suggestions based on your needs. At Kana Post, our online support team acts as your virtual budtender.
C
Cannabinoids
The chemical compounds unique to cannabis that act upon the human body’s cannabinoid receptors, producing various effects including pain relief and other medically beneficial uses. Marijuana’s most well-known cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) due to the fact that it is the most abundant and produces the psychoactive effects. However, there are over 100 known cannabinoids all with varying effects, including CBD, CBN, CBG, and CBC.
Cannabis
A plant genus that produces three species of flowering plants: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica are used to produce both recreational and medical marijuana. Cannabis is native to Asia but grows almost anywhere and has long been cultivated both for the production of hemp and to be used as a drug.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
The abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of at least 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis and the second only to THC when it comes to average volume. CBD has gained support for its use as a medical treatment as research has shown it effectively treats pain, inflammation, and anxiety without the psychoactive effects associated with THC. Browse our CBD products including oils, tinctures, capsules, and topicals.
CBG (Cannabigerol)
Known as the “mother of all cannabinoids,” CBG is the precursor from which other cannabinoids are synthesized. Early research suggests potential benefits for glaucoma, inflammation, and neuroprotection. CBG flower and isolates are becoming increasingly popular in the Canadian cannabis market.
CBN (Cannabinol)
A mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that forms as THC degrades over time. CBN is often associated with sedative effects and is commonly found in aged cannabis. Many users seek out CBN products for sleep support.
Clone
A clipping from a cannabis plant, which can then be rooted and grown through a cloning process of the mother plant, from which the clone was cut. Cloning ensures genetic consistency across crops.
CO2 Oil
A cannabis concentrate made from the Supercritical CO2 extraction process. Supercritical CO2 is a fluid state of carbon dioxide held at or above the critical point of temperature and pressure, which can be used as a solvent in the cannabis extraction process. CO2 oil is considered cleaner than BHO.
Concentrates
A potent consolidation of cannabinoids made by dissolving marijuana in its plant form into a solvent. The resulting product has very high THC levels (generally more than flowers or hashish) and can produce varying products that range from thick sticky oils (BHO) to moldable goo (budder/wax) to resinous bits (shatter). Shop Canada’s best selection of concentrates at Kana Post.
Crumble
A dry, crumbly cannabis concentrate with a texture similar to honeycomb. Crumble is made using a similar process to budder but purged at a lower temperature for a longer time, resulting in a brittle final product that is easy to sprinkle on bowls or joints.
Cross (Genetics)
The result when two different plant strains are bred together. For example, Blue Dream is a cross between Blueberry and Haze strains. Most cannabis on the market today is some form of hybrid cross.
Cultivar
A cultivated variety of cannabis. The term “cultivar” is often used interchangeably with “strain” by botanists and serious growers, though technically a cultivar refers to a variety that has been selectively bred and maintained through cultivation.
Cure
The process of drying and aging harvested cannabis flower to improve flavor, aroma, and smoothness. Proper curing involves storing dried buds in airtight containers and “burping” them periodically. Well-cured cannabis burns cleaner and tastes significantly better than rushed product.
D
Dab / Dabbing
A dab is a dose of cannabis concentrates “dabbed” onto a red-hot surface and inhaled. The act of “dabbing” refers to partaking in dabs. Dabbing delivers extremely potent effects due to the high THC content of concentrates.
Dank
Slang for high-quality, potent cannabis with a strong, pungent aroma. If someone describes flower as “dank,” it means it is sticky, fresh, and rich in terpenes — the kind of premium bud Kana Post specializes in.
Decarboxylation
The process of heating cannabis to activate its cannabinoids. Raw cannabis contains THCA and CBDA, which must be converted to THC and CBD through heat (smoking, vaping, or baking) to produce psychoactive or therapeutic effects. This is why you cannot get high from eating raw cannabis.
Delta-8 THC
A naturally occurring cannabinoid similar to Delta-9 THC but with milder psychoactive effects. Delta-8 has gained popularity for producing a clearer, less anxious high. It is often derived from hemp and sold in vape cartridges and edibles.
Delta-9 THC
The primary psychoactive compound in cannabis responsible for the “high.” Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol was first isolated in 1964 and is the most abundant cannabinoid in recreational marijuana. There is no lethal dose of THC in its natural form.
Diamonds
Crystalline structures of pure THCA found in high-end cannabis concentrates. Diamonds are often paired with terpene-rich “sauce” to create a potent, flavorful dab. They represent some of the strongest concentrates available.
Dispensary
A general term for any location where a patient or consumer can legitimately and safely access cannabis. Kana Post operates as an online dispensary in Canada, offering mail order marijuana to all provinces and territories.
Distillate
A highly refined cannabis extract that has been stripped of all compounds except one specific cannabinoid (usually THC or CBD). Distillate often tests at 90%+ purity and is used in vape cartridges, edibles, and topicals due to its neutral flavor and versatility.
Dry Sift
A solventless extraction method where cannabis trichomes are separated from plant material using fine screens and gentle agitation. The resulting powder is essentially pure kief, which can be pressed into hash or sprinkled on flower.
E
Edibles
Medicated edible goods that have been infused with cannabis extracts. They are commonly baked goods such as cookies and brownies, but options as varied as flavored coffee drinks, breads, and candies exist as well. Consuming edibles means the active components require longer to take effect as they need to be absorbed through the digestive system. Effects typically onset within 30–90 minutes.
Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
A complex cell-signaling system found in all mammals that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, pain, and immune response. The ECS has receptors (CB1 and CB2) that cannabinoids like THC and CBD bind to, which is why cannabis affects so many different bodily functions.
Entourage Effect
The theory that cannabinoids, terpenes, and other cannabis compounds work synergistically to produce enhanced therapeutic effects when consumed together, rather than in isolation. This is why many users prefer full-spectrum products over isolates.
Extract
Any product created by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis plant material. Extracts include shatter, wax, oil, live resin, and hash. They are significantly more potent than flower.
F
Feminized
Plants that come from seeds selectively bred to produce only female plants. Since female plants produce flowers (where most cannabinoids are found), they are the only ones used to create marijuana products. Feminized seeds eliminate the need to determine plant sex and remove males to prevent fertilization.
Flowering Time
The time it takes for a plant to produce mature flowers. Cannabis flowering times are affected by the length of daily sun exposure (with the exception of Cannabis ruderalis, which flowers automatically). When flowering times are reported for a strain, they are general estimates based on optimal conditions.
Flowers
The reproductive organ of female cannabis plants. Cannabis flowers are the hairy, sticky, crystal-covered bits that are harvested and dried to be used as medication or for recreation. When you buy weed online, you are purchasing dried cannabis flowers.
Flush
The practice of feeding plants only plain water (no nutrients) for the final 1–2 weeks before harvest. Flushing removes residual nutrients from the plant tissue, resulting in a smoother, cleaner-burning final product with better flavor.
Full Spectrum
A cannabis extract that contains the complete range of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other beneficial compounds found in the original plant. Full-spectrum CBD oil is believed to offer enhanced benefits due to the entourage effect compared to CBD isolate.
G
Grinder
A device used to break down cannabis buds into smaller, more uniform pieces for rolling, packing bowls, or vaporizing. Most grinders have multiple chambers — the top grinds the flower, while the bottom collects the kief that falls through a fine screen.
H
Half O (Half Ounce)
14 grams of cannabis flower. A half ounce is a popular mid-tier purchase for regular consumers who want better value than a quarter without committing to a full ounce. Kana Post offers competitive pricing on half ounces across all grades.
Hash / Hashish
Derived from cannabis plants and used for consumption or medication. Production involves the removal of the plant’s trichomes by sieving or filtering. Once collected, the cannabinoid-laden powder is pressed and ready to use. Hash ranges in potency but is generally stronger than straight flowers. Browse our hash collection including traditional import and domestic varieties.
Heirloom
A cannabis strain that was taken from its native homeland and propagated in another geographical location. Heirlooms are prized for their genetic purity and unique regional characteristics.
Hemp
A fibrous product produced from the male cannabis plant, used in the manufacture of rope, paper, beauty products, and a vast array of other products. Hemp plants have minimal value as a drug since they are males and contain negligible THC.
HTE (High Terpene Extract)
A cannabis concentrate that prioritizes terpene preservation over THC potency. HTE is often saucy or syrupy in texture and delivers exceptional flavor and aroma. It is frequently combined with THC diamonds to create “diamonds and sauce.”
Hybrid
A plant that is genetically a cross between one or more separate strains of cannabis. Hybrids can happen unintentionally, but they are usually bred specifically to combine desired traits. Most marijuana on the market today is some form of hybrid.
Hydroponics
A system of gardening that does not use soil. Plants are grown in water and receive nutrients from added solutions. Hydroponically grown cannabis is sometimes said to have cleaner, more distinct flavors due to the controlled environment.
I
Indica
The less scientific name for the Cannabis indica species. These plants originated in the Middle East and Asia and include both the famous kush and Afghan lineages. Compared to sativas, indicas are shorter, bushier, and produce more relaxing physical effects with a sedative quality. Browse indica flower at Kana Post.
Isolate
A cannabis extract that has been refined to contain only a single cannabinoid (typically CBD or THC) in pure crystalline form. Isolates test at 99%+ purity and contain no terpenes or other plant compounds.
J
Joint
A cannabis cigarette rolled in thin paper. Joints are one of the most traditional and popular methods of consuming cannabis. They can be rolled by hand or with a rolling machine and may include a cardboard filter tip.
K

Kief
A collected amount of trichomes that have been separated from the rest of the marijuana flower. Since trichomes contain the vast majority of the plant’s cannabinoids, kief is extremely potent. It is the primary ingredient in hashish production and can be sprinkled on bowls for an extra kick.
Kush
A line of cannabis plants that hail from the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kush strains are indicas and have a unique aroma described as earthy, piney, and often citrus or sweet. Famous kush strains include OG Kush, Purple Kush, and Bubba Kush.
L
Landrace
A local variety of cannabis that has adapted to the environment of its geographic location. Landrace strains are often named after their native region, like Afghani, Thai, and Hawaiian. Traces of landraces are detectable in the names of their crossbred descendants.
Live Resin
A premium cannabis concentrate made from fresh-frozen cannabis plants rather than dried and cured flower. Freezing the plant immediately after harvest preserves the full terpene profile, resulting in unmatched flavor and aroma. Live resin is considered a connoisseur-grade concentrate.
Live Rosin
A solventless concentrate made by pressing fresh-frozen cannabis flower or hash with heat and pressure. Live rosin captures the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes without any chemical solvents, making it one of the purest and most sought-after concentrates on the market.
Low-Temp Dab
A dabbing technique where concentrates are vaporized at lower temperatures (typically 315–450°F). Low-temp dabs preserve more terpenes, resulting in better flavor and a smoother inhale compared to high-temperature dabs which can degrade terpenes and create harsher vapor.
M
Mail Order Marijuana (MOM)
The Canadian system of purchasing cannabis online and having it delivered via Canada Post. Kana Post is a leading MOM dispensary, shipping premium cannabis products discreetly to every province and territory. No medical card required — just age verification (19+).
Marijuana
The general term for female cannabis plants or their dried flowers. Females are distinct from male plants in that they produce flowers containing the high percentage of cannabinoids that hold both medicinal and psychoactive properties.
Microdosing
The practice of consuming very small amounts of cannabis (typically 1–5mg THC) to achieve subtle therapeutic benefits without strong psychoactive effects. Microdosing is popular among medical users and professionals who want relief without impairment. Low-dose edibles are ideal for microdosing.
Moon Rocks
Cannabis buds that have been dipped in hash oil and rolled in kief, creating an ultra-potent product. Moon rocks typically contain 50%+ THC and should be consumed in small quantities by experienced users only.
MCT Oil
Medium-chain triglyceride oil, a common carrier oil used in cannabis tinctures and vape cartridges. MCT oil is derived from coconut oil and helps the body absorb cannabinoids more efficiently.
N
Nug
Slang for a single piece of dried cannabis flower. High-quality nugs are dense, sticky, and covered in trichomes. “Nug-run” concentrates are made exclusively from whole buds rather than trim, resulting in superior flavor and potency.
O
OG
A term originally used to describe Southern California’s Ocean Grown Kush, quickly shortened to OG Kush. OG Kush grew rapidly in fame, and now “OG” is used to describe many strains, most of which are variations of the original OG Kush genetics or grown on the West Coast.
Ounce (Oz / Zip)
28 grams of cannabis flower. The ounce is the standard bulk unit for buying weed online in Canada. Kana Post is home of the original $79 ounce, with budget buds starting at just $59/ounce.
P
Phenotype
The general physical characteristics of a cannabis plant such as height, color, branching, and leaf configuration. Phenotypes can vary even among seeds from the same strain, which is why growers often “hunt” for exceptional phenos.
Pistil
Part of a female plant’s anatomy identified as the little hair-like extensions on the flowers that range in color from white to red to darker orange-brown. When plants are left unfertilized, pistils change color and can be indicators of plant ripeness.
Pot
Slang for marijuana. The term originated in the 1930s and remains one of the most commonly used casual terms for cannabis.
Pre-Roll
A pre-rolled marijuana cigarette, commonly known as a joint. Many dispensaries have pre-rolls available for purchase as a convenient, ready-to-smoke option. Kana Post offers premium pre-rolls made with whole flower, not trim.
Pull-and-Snap
A cannabis concentrate consistency that is stretchy and taffy-like. It snaps cleanly when pulled, making it easy to handle without being as brittle as shatter. Pull-and-snap is a popular texture for BHO extracts.
Q
QP (Quarter Pound)
112 grams (4 ounces) of cannabis flower. A quarter pound is a popular bulk purchase for heavy consumers, medical patients, or those splitting orders with friends. Kana Post offers significant savings on QP mix-and-match deals.
Quarter (Q / Quad)
7 grams of cannabis flower. A quarter ounce is one of the most common purchase sizes for regular consumers, offering better value than a gram or eighth without the upfront cost of a half or full ounce.
R
Reclaim
The residual concentrate that collects inside a dab rig or vaporizer after repeated use. Reclaim contains activated cannabinoids and can be collected and re-dabbed, though it lacks the terpene richness of fresh concentrate.
Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)
A thick, dark cannabis oil named after Canadian activist Rick Simpson. RSO is made using ethanol extraction and is typically consumed orally or applied topically. It is known for its high potency and is popular among medical cannabis patients seeking full-spectrum relief.
Roach
The small, leftover end of a smoked joint or blunt. Roaches contain concentrated resin and can be saved to roll into a new joint (known as a “generation joint”) or extracted for their residual cannabinoids.
Rolling Papers
Thin sheets of paper used to roll cannabis into joints. Papers come in various sizes (single wide, 1 1/4, king size) and materials including hemp, rice, and wood pulp. Kana Post includes free rolling papers with qualifying orders.
Rosin
A solventless cannabis concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to flower or hash. Rosin is prized for its purity — no butane, CO2, or alcohol is used in its production. It delivers full-spectrum effects and exceptional flavor.
Ruderalis
A low-THC cannabis variety primarily selected by breeders for its autoflowering trait. Unlike Cannabis sativa and indica, which use light cycles to flower, ruderalis flowers with age. Originating in Russia, ruderalis is a hardy plant that can survive harsh climates.
S
Sauce
A cannabis concentrate with a thick, liquid consistency rich in terpenes. Sauce often contains crystalline THCA structures suspended in a terpene-heavy matrix. It is one of the most flavorful concentrate types available.
Sativa
The less scientific name for the Cannabis sativa species. These plants originated in areas such as South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Thailand. They tend to grow taller, are lighter in color, and take longer to flower. When consumed, sativas produce more cerebral, energizing effects. Browse sativa flower at Kana Post.
Shake
Small pieces of cannabis flower that break off larger buds during handling and packaging. Shake contains the same cannabinoids as whole flower but at a lower price point. It is ideal for rolling joints, making edibles, or filling vaporizers.
Shatter
A glass-like cannabis concentrate with THC levels of 70–90%. Shatter has a brittle, translucent texture that “shatters” when broken. It is one of the most popular concentrates for dabbing due to its potency and clean flavor.
Solvent / Solventless
A solvent is a chemical (like butane, propane, or CO2) used to extract cannabinoids from plant material. Solventless extracts are made using only mechanical methods — heat, pressure, ice water, or dry sifting — with no chemicals. Solventless products like rosin and ice hash are preferred by purity-focused consumers.
Spliff
A cannabis joint rolled with a mixture of tobacco and marijuana. Spliffs are more common in Europe than North America. The tobacco adds a head rush and causes the joint to burn more evenly.
Strain
A specific variety of a plant species. Strains are developed to produce distinct desired traits and are usually named by their breeders. Strain names often reflect the plant’s appearance, its promised buzz, or its place of origin. Kana Post carries hundreds of strains ranging from classic indicas to rare hybrids.
Sugar
A cannabis concentrate with a wet, sugary texture similar to granulated sugar in honey. Sugar concentrates are rich in terpenes and easy to handle, making them popular for both dabbing and topping bowls.
T
Terpenes
Aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and many other plants) that give each strain its unique smell and flavor. Common cannabis terpenes include myrcene (earthy), limonene (citrus), pinene (pine), and caryophyllene (peppery). Terpenes also contribute to the entourage effect and may have therapeutic properties of their own.
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
The most well-known and abundantly available cannabinoid in marijuana. THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects, or the “high.” Also known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, it was first isolated in 1964. Research has shown THC to be an effective medical treatment for a range of conditions. There is no lethal dose in its natural form.
THC-A
Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the raw, non-psychoactive precursor to THC. THC-A converts to THC through decarboxylation (heating). Some users consume raw THC-A for potential anti-inflammatory benefits without psychoactive effects.
Tincture
A liquid cannabis extract usually made with alcohol or glycerol that is often dosed with a dropper. Tinctures can be flavored and are usually placed under the tongue, where they are absorbed quickly. Effects can be felt within minutes. Tinctures can also be mixed into a drink, though effects will take longer.
Tolerance
The body’s reduced response to cannabis after repeated use. Regular consumers often develop tolerance and require higher doses to achieve the same effects. A “tolerance break” (abstaining for 1–4 weeks) can reset sensitivity and make cannabis more effective again.
Topical
A cannabis product where the active properties have been extracted and added to a lotion or cream applied to the skin. The medicinal properties are absorbed through the skin and can treat muscle aches, long-term soreness, or ailments like dry skin. Topicals typically do not produce psychoactive effects.
Trichome
The resin production glands of the cannabis plant. In Greek the word means “growth of hair,” and while these sticky protrusions make plants appear hairy, they are not hairs. THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids are all produced in these tiny, crystal-like glands. The density of trichomes is a key indicator of flower quality.
Trim
The excess leaves removed from cannabis buds after harvest. Sugar leaves (coated in trichomes) are often used to make extracts, edibles, or pre-rolls. Fan leaves contain minimal cannabinoids and are typically discarded.
V
Vape Cartridge / 510 Thread
A pre-filled container of cannabis oil that attaches to a vape pen battery. Most cartridges use a 510 thread — the industry standard connection size. Vape cartridges are discreet, portable, and produce less odor than smoking flower.
Vaporizer
A device used to consume marijuana by heating either flowers or marijuana-infused oils to a temperature that produces a cannabinoid-laced vapor to inhale. Vaporizing is healthier than smoking since there is no smoke to ingest, but this method still produces near-instant effects. Browse vapes and cartridges at Kana Post.
W
Water Hash (Bubble Hash)
A solventless concentrate made by agitating cannabis in ice-cold water. The cold temperatures make trichomes brittle, causing them to break off and sink. The trichomes are then filtered through mesh bags (bubble bags) of varying micron sizes. Premium water hash can be pressed into temple balls or dabbed.
Wax
A cannabis concentrate with a thick, opaque, waxy consistency. Wax is made by whipping extracted cannabinoids during the purging process, trapping air and creating a soft, easy-to-handle texture. It is one of the most popular concentrate types for dabbing.
Weed
The most common slang term for marijuana. When Canadians search for buy weed online or mail order marijuana, they are looking for the same thing — dried cannabis flower and products derived from it.
